Wilberforce University has officially been removed from the accreditation watchlist following a notification from the Higher Learning Commission Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees confirmed the university had met compliance with all accreditation criteria.
The university was officially taken off the HLC’s watch list as of October 31, 2024. The accreditation status of Wilberforce has been changed from “Accredited—On Notice” to just “Accredited.” This decision shows the college’s dedication to meeting and surpassing HLC’s rigorous criteria and follows an extensive assessment process that included a notice visit, in-depth reports, and institutional replies.
Wilberforce University President Vann R. Newkirk spoke about the university’s milestone. “We are immensely proud of this achievement,” he said. This milestone reflects our collective efforts to provide high-quality education and support to our students. We remain committed to continuous improvement and look forward to building on this success.”
Wilberforce University has been working diligently to improve its accreditation status. In keeping with its dedication to academic improvement, the university has effectively expanded its academic offerings by adding faculty members, guaranteeing that each program has a minimum of one instructor with a terminal certificate. Research and instructional possibilities have been further enhanced by partnerships with other Ohio colleges and institutions.
Beyond academic advancements, the university has made significant progress in improving student services. Now that a system is in place to track and enhance student contacts with support personnel, prompt and efficient help is guaranteed. Additionally, via improved data collection and analysis made possible by the updated student information system and a dedicated Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Assessment, and Research, student retention and completion rates have increased.
Wilberforce University has developed a sustainable financial plan that involves improving financial processes and creating new cash streams. Additionally, recent debt refinances have strengthened the institution’s financial base and guaranteed its long-term survival. President Newkirk noted the significance of this accreditation update, particularly as it positions the university for future growth.
“Wilberforce is the fastest-growing university in Ohio, with a 43% enrollment increase in the past two years,” he stated. “We have increased our enrollment without increasing the scholarship budget or the institutional discount rate, which stands at 17%. Having the sanction removed means improved opportunities for funding and continued enrollment growth. This is a big milestone for Wilberforce.”
