Last week during Viking Fest at Elizabeth City State University, a shooting occurred on campus, injuring six people and killing one. The incident took place during Yard Fest, concluding the university’s weeklong celebration of events.
The individual who was killed was a 24-year-old male and not a student at ECSU; his identity has not been made public. Four people, including three ECSU students, were among the wounded in the shooting. The resulting chaos resulted in the injuries of two more students. None of the injuries were life-threatening, and all injured parties were taken to a nearby hospital.
“The university is deeply saddened by this senseless act,” an update from the university said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all members of the Viking community affected by this tragedy.”
Following the shooting, ECSU ordered all students to remain indoors and instituted a campus lockdown. Later that day, after law enforcement officials deemed the campus safe, the lockdown was removed. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the Elizabeth City Police Department, the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office, the Camden County Sheriff’s Office, and the ECSU Police are continuing to look into the incident.
ECSU has stepped up campus patrols and restricted access to campus the following day. University Towers, Viking Towers, University Suites, and Bias Hall all offered support services for staff, instructors, and students. Counseling services are also available via phone at 252-335-3275, both on-call and after hours. Please call ECSU Police at 252-335-3266 if you have any information about the event; the investigation is still ongoing.”
The event occurred over a week after Florida State University’s deadly campus shooting, in which authorities claim a student and the son of a local sheriff’s deputy opened fire on the university’s Tallahassee campus, killing two people and injuring six more.
