Teiyah Hicks, a college senior, suffered back-to-back impact in an accident on a Texas freeway two weeks ago, and both the authorities and the news announced her to be dead. But today, she is still alive and fighting for her life in the hospital.
The 21-year-old Texas Southern University student came out of that life-threatening incident with several broken bones and internal injuries for which she has already undergone thirteen surgeries. Her parents, Jennifer and Marcus Hicks, have remained determined that their daughter will one day walk again.
“Our baby is going to walk out of there,” Jennifer told KHOU 11.
Last Friday, the Hicks family demonstrated their unwavering trust in their daughter’s journey to recovery through a vigil they held at HCA Northwest Hospital.
The car accident occurred along the North Freeway at Mount Houston Road in Houston, TX. Her father arrived at the scene, but at first did not know that she was involved. He said that even though his daughter was pronounced dead at the scene, she had a pulse by the time she made it to the ER. Since then, her parents say, Teiyah has been making daily small strides towards healing.
“Every day it’s a baby step on what’s going to happen,” Jennifer Hicks said. “And being able to make sure that we can stay strong because she’s fighting for her life in there.”
The Hicks family and those near and dear to the TSU student have kept the hashtags #TeiyahStrong and #KeepFightingTeiyah trending on social media. Support for Teiyah remains strong, as her GoFundMe meant for help with medical bills has garnered over $7,000 to date.
During her undergraduate career, Teiyah has served as a TSU Ambassador and was studying to become a teacher. As per the Hicks family, the car crash is still under investigation.
