Texas Southern University alumnus Kamau Marshall has been named the new Chief Strategist and Chief Communications Officer for the Baltimore City Mayor’s Office. In addition to being a Texas Southern alumnus, Marshall is also a member of the Delta Theta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Marshall’s extensive resume includes both government and politics, working in several congressional offices and presidential administrations.

Baltimore’s Mayor Brandon M. Scott released a statement highlighting the importance of Marshall’s appointment.

“Mr. Kamau Marshall’s skills and experience working in fast-paced and high-stakes environments are very important and are a critical reason why we are glad he is onboard with us in Baltimore. Quite frankly, Kamau’s career, track record, understanding, professionalism, and skills are needed in this climate, “ said Mayor Scott.

In addition to working with the late Congressman Elijah Cummings and Congressman John Lewis, Marshall has a wealth of expertise from both the Obama-Biden and Biden-Harris administrations. The Scott administration benefits from his extensive connections in the political and governmental sectors. Mayor Scott also added, “ “He is a proven professional and public servant with deep relationships and ties across administrations and governments at local and state levels.”

Prior to the new appointment, Marshall has a direct connection to the city of Baltimore. Before moving to Georgia, Marshall attended Waverly Elementary School. Mayor Scott expressed the importance of having someone who understands the city of Baltimore.

“More importantly, it’s also about having someone come back home. Kamau understands Baltimore, and he is now back again and part of a team writing a chapter of the Baltimore Renaissance,” said Mayor Scott.

Marshall expressed his excitement about rejoining the city in response to his appointment:

“I had the honor and privilege of working in Baltimore for the late Congressman Elijah E. Cummings a decade ago. Today, I find myself embarking on a third chapter in my journey: first as a young child, then serving the 7th Congressional District under the late Rep. Cummings, and now joining Mayor Brandon M. Scott’s administration. I am truly filled with enthusiasm to harness and build upon that momentum while serving the residents of Baltimore.”

In his new role, Marshall will serve as the mayor’s chief spokesperson in addition to being in charge of Baltimore’s communications plan and spearheading initiatives for public involvement in all city departments. The timing of his appointment is crucial as Mayor Scott’s administration seeks to solidify its legacy by emphasizing ongoing infrastructure upgrades, economic growth, and crime reduction. The administration is trying to make sure that the city tells its own story rather than letting outsiders define it, and under Scott’s direction, Baltimore has witnessed notable drops in non-fatal shootings and gun violence.
