North Carolina Central University has earned the title of Fulbright Historically Black College and University Institutional Leader for 2024 from the U.S. Department of State. This recognition celebrates NCCU’s dedicated support for the Fulbright international exchange program and highlights the university’s ongoing efforts to foster global engagement and cultural exchange.

Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program has been a cornerstone in promoting international understanding. Over the decades, it has provided more than 400,000 individuals with the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research in various countries around the world. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Government and over 160 partner countries, offering a broad spectrum of transformative academic and cultural exchange opportunities.

Each year, the Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders earn recognition for their significant efforts to promote global connections on their campuses. This award underscores NCCU as a prominent institution for international students and scholars, celebrating its rich academic and intellectual heritage. The recognition also reflects the university’s commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment.

James Ham, the director of the Office of International Affairs at NCCU, shared his pride in the university’s accomplishments. “For decades, North Carolina Central University has been at the forefront of global engagement,” Ham said. “We take immense pride in our legacy of internationalization, both within our institution and the broader community. The Fulbright program fuels our ongoing commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of the world”

Since 1961, NCCU has seen 25 of its professors join the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. In the last 26 years, the university has hosted scholars from a wide array of countries, including Ghana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, as well as India and South Africa.
