As the presidential election is around the corner and things are heating up, Howard University has introduced new mandatory guidelines for political engagement by faculty, students, and affiliated organizations. These guidelines aim to protect the University’s non-partisan status and ensure its financial stability during this politically charged period.

According to a recent press release from the University, Howard is deeply committed to addressing critical global and national issues, guided by its core values of excellence, leadership, service, and truth. With alumna Vice President Kamala Harris now the Democratic presidential nominee, the University highlights the need for clear boundaries to avoid any unintended association with political campaigns. It warns that any breaches of these guidelines “could have significant consequences that would jeopardize the financial future of the University.”

The University has issued a detailed Political Activity Guidance to All Key Stakeholders policy PDF, which outlines specific rules and restrictions.

The policy prohibits the University and its affiliates from engaging in partisan political activities. This includes making financial contributions to campaigns, soliciting donations, creating or distributing content supporting or opposing candidates, favoring particular candidates at University events, and establishing political action committees (PACs).

While personal political activities are permitted, they must be identified as individual opinions and not as representations of Howard University. Additionally, the use of University resources such as logos, facilities, office supplies, and social media platforms for political activities is prohibited. Public statements by key stakeholders must clearly state that these opinions are personal and not those of Howard University.

In addition to these guidelines, Howard University emphasizes that its longstanding commitment to leadership and social change must remain uncompromised and that, “We hope that you will join in protecting the important legacy of Howard University by following this important guidance.
