Elizabeth City State University’s Interim Chancellor, Dr. Catherine Edmonds, has achieved a remarkable milestone, being honored with the prestigious 2024 President’s Lifetime Achievement Award. With over 30 years of experience across all levels of public education, Edmonds has shaped the future of countless students and educators in North Carolina.

Her journey began in Granville County Schools, where she worked as a high school math teacher and later as a principal. Passionate about elevating education standards, she expanded her influence by serving as a director for the North Carolina New Schools Project and later as an instructional improvement officer for Guilford County Schools. Her leadership only grew stronger when she became superintendent for two northeastern North Carolina school districts, working to revitalize underperforming schools and ensure quality education for all.

Dr. Edmonds’ commitment didn’t stop there. At the state level, she held influential roles as the state director of the North Carolina Principal Fellows Program and deputy state superintendent at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. In these positions, she focused on professional development, coaching aspiring school leaders, and spearheading reforms to improve struggling schools. Under her leadership, the District and School Transformation Team earned the 2012 State Superintendent’s Team Leadership Award, highlighting her ability to drive significant change in educational outcomes.

During a ceremony held at North Carolina Central University, Dr. Edmonds was formally honored with the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award, which includes a medallion, a lifetime service pin, and a letter of commendation from President Joe Biden. This award, established by President George H. Bush, is the highest civilian recognition for community service in the United States. It acknowledges individuals like Dr. Edmonds, who have dedicated their lives to making lasting, positive impacts on their communities.

A proud first-generation college graduate, Dr. Edmonds has deep ties to North Carolina’s public higher education system. She earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from North Carolina A&T State University and later completed graduate studies at North Carolina Central University and North Carolina State University, where she earned her master’s degree in educational leadership and Doctor of Education in educational administration. Her academic achievements laid the foundation for her remarkable career in education.

Before stepping into her role as interim chancellor at Elizabeth City State University, Dr. Edmonds served as chief of staff at NCCU, where her leadership left a lasting imprint. Her influence, however, extends well beyond administrative roles. She has dedicated her life to building pathways for students and educators, ensuring that every school and community she touches experiences growth and transformation.

Dr. Catherine Edmonds’ recognition with the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award is a testament to her tireless work in advancing public education. Her legacy continues to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders across North Carolina and beyond.
