The end of the century saw several talented HBCU players get selected out of HBCUs in the NFL Draft. Some of the players selected are known today for their contributions off of the field like Reggie Barlow, who became an HBCU head coaching mainstay for Alabama State and Virginia State. He now serves as head coach for the DC Defenders of the UFL.
Also of note, Donald Driver from Alcorn was selected in 1999 and Driver became a standout wide receiver with the Packers. He even caught the seven-yard completion from Brett Favre that ultimately broke Dan Marino’s all-time record mark of 61,361 career passing yards.
