Dallas Cowboys defensive back Markquese Bell was arrested Friday in Texas and is facing charges related to drug possession, according to a report from ESPN’s Todd Archer citing records from the Collin County jail. Bell has been charged with possession of a controlled substance and marijuana. The Cowboys organization acknowledged awareness of the situation but declined to offer additional comment.
Because the NFL enforces a personal conduct policy regarding legal issues involving players, Bell could face league discipline depending on the outcome of the case. Possible penalties could include a suspension or financial fine. Possession of a controlled substance is considered a felony under federal law, while marijuana possession is typically treated as a Class B misdemeanor.
Before entering the NFL, Bell built his reputation at Florida A&M, where he developed into one of the program’s defensive standouts. During his senior season in 2021, the Rattlers safety recorded 95 tackles, including 71 solo stops, along with two sacks, five forced fumbles, and a pass deflection.
Bell’s path to FAMU included a stop at Coffeyville Community College before joining the Rattlers in 2019 under head coach Willie Simmons. Despite entering the 2022 NFL Draft as an undrafted prospect, Bell earned an opportunity with the Dallas Cowboys through free agency and gradually carved out a role within the defense.
In March 2025, Dallas rewarded Bell with a three-year contract extension worth $9 million. During the 2025 season, he appeared in all 17 games and started three, finishing the year with 41 total tackles, including 20 solo tackles, along with a tackle for loss, a forced fumble, an interception, and three passes defended.
