Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan recently announced exciting news for Virginia State University as the university has secured $693,664 in federal funding to launch the HBCU Research and Collaboration Exchange Project. This initiative focuses on expanding research opportunities and fostering stronger collaboration among Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

VSU will develop a network that connects researchers from different HBCUs, making it easier to collaborate, share resources, and access each other’s expertise. By building a system that brings together scholars and the equipment they need, the project aims to boost interdisciplinary research and position HBCUs as leaders in innovation.

The institution will create a comprehensive directory to showcase the knowledge, tools, and resources available across various HBCUs. This directory will help researchers connect with others in their field, driving collaboration that leads to greater impact.

As the project grows, it will strengthen the research ties between HBCUs, providing more opportunities for students and faculty to engage in breakthrough research and cutting-edge projects.

McClellan praised VSU’s vision, saying, “Virginia State University’s new project will spur research innovation across HBCUs, creating new opportunities for students and strengthening collaboration. I commend VSU for its desire to enhance research at HBCU institutions nationwide. I also thank the National Science Foundation for this award and the Biden-Harris Administration for their continued commitment to HBCUs.”

The National Science Foundation provided the funding through its Advancing Research Capacity at HBCUs through the Exploration and Innovation (ARC-HBCU) Program. This program supports collaboration and the creation of sustainable networks that fuel interdisciplinary research in STEM fields. By investing in this project, the NSF aims to elevate the visibility and influence of HBCU research.

With the launch of the HBCU Research and Collaboration Exchange Project, VSU takes a major step toward strengthening research across HBCUs. The initiative will not only enhance collaboration but will also spotlight the significant contributions these institutions make to the broader academic community.
