A Spelman College student is facing multiple charges after being involved in a wrong-way crash that left one person seriously injured early Friday morning.
The accident occurred around 3:20 a.m. on March 7, 2025, along I-75/I-85 near the North Avenue exit, shutting down the interstate for several hours. According to Georgia State Patrol, a trooper spotted a 2012 Mercedes-Benz traveling north in the southbound HOV lane and attempted to stop the vehicle. However, before authorities could intervene, the car, driven by 20-year-old Addison Thornton, collided head-on with a 2018 Buick Encore.
Thornton’s passenger, a 17-year-old fellow Spelman College student, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital. There have been no further updates on their condition or the condition of others involved in the crash.
Troopers reported that Thornton failed a DUI test at the scene and was found in possession of a fraudulent driver’s license. She has since been charged with driving under the influence, driving on the wrong side of the roadway, possession of a fraudulent driver’s license, serious injury by motor vehicle, and underage consumption.
Spelman College confirmed in a statement that both Thornton and her passenger are enrolled at the institution.
“We are aware that two Spelman students were involved in an off-campus traffic accident on March 7, 2025. At this time, we are gathering more information and have been in touch with the families of both students,” a spokesperson stated.
Thornton is currently being held at the Fulton County Jail. Authorities have yet to release additional details about the conditions of those injured in the crash.
This incident has sparked discussions about the dangers of underage drinking and reckless driving, particularly among college students. It also raises concerns about safety measures needed to prevent such tragedies from occurring. As more information unfolds, the focus remains on the well-being of those affected and the legal consequences Thornton now faces.
