Dr. McCorn’s appointment comes as Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones retires after a remarkable 31 years of service to Paine College. Throughout her tenure, Dr. Jones significantly shaped the college’s Transformation Plan, and now Dr. McCorn is ready to advance it as he builds on her legacy. He and his wife, Charlene M. McCorn, an elementary school teacher in Fort Mill, South Carolina, are proud parents of four adult children and five grandchildren.
Paine College’s Board of Trustees has appointed Rev. Dr. Lester A. McCorn as the institution’s new President-select, with his official start date set for January 1, 2025. Known for his impactful leadership in higher education, Dr. McCorn brings an inspiring vision and years of proven experience to the historic institution.
Dr. McCorn is no stranger to driving change in higher education. Since 2017, he has served as president and professor of Christian leadership at Clinton College in Rock Hill, South Carolina. His tenure there is marked by transformational strides such as a 27% increase in student enrollment as of fall 2024, a 20% improvement in student retention, and a 25% boost in graduation rates.
Under his guidance, Clinton College added five new bachelor’s degree programs and secured over $20 million in grants and awards. Hailing from Worcester, Massachusetts, Dr. McCorn is an ordained elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and has served in pastoral roles across several states. His academic achievements include a Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary and a Master of Divinity Studies from Yale University School of Divinity, along with degrees from Morehouse College, Charter Oak State College, and Chicago Theological Seminary.
In accepting the role, Dr. McCorn shared his enthusiasm, “My acceptance originates from a place of deep respect and admiration for the legacy and significance of this historic institution. Connecting Paine College’s historic past with a strategic vision for the future will catapult this institution into unparalleled prominence in American higher education. I relish the opportunity to collaborate with Paine College’s trustees, administrators, alumni, students, faculty, stakeholders, and civic and business leaders to realize our vision for higher education excellence.”
A life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Dr. McCorn brings personal and professional dedication to his new role. The Paine College community welcomed him during formal introductions on October 18, and additional focus group meetings are underway. This generates excitement for a future grounded in educational excellence and institutional growth under Dr. McCorn’s leadership.
This new chapter signals a promising era for Paine College as it continues its historic legacy in higher education and looks ahead to a dynamic future.
