Early Wednesday morning at approximately 12:36 a.m. officers responded to a reported shooting on the campus of Virginia State University. Two adult males and two adult females were shot and rushed to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries according to Chesterfield County Police news release.
Police have arrested two suspects who were at the scene of the crime on gun charges.
Both Clyde D. White Jr, 21, and Xavier J. Gordon, 21, of Chesterfield County, were arrested and charged with brandishing a firearm while Gordon was also charged with carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. Police have stated “it is not known whether Gordon or White are known to any of the shooting victims. “
Neither Gordon nor White are currently enrolled at the university according to university spokesperson Gwen Williams Dandridge.
“Right now, students who are on campus now are our first-time students.” Dandridge said, “Our returning students should not be on campus at this time. They don’t come back to campus until next week, this is a welcome week for our campus.”
She said, “There had been a welcome event that happened in the evening, but that event had ended and was over hours before this incident occurred and was in a separate location on campus.”
The university is set to begin classes Monday, August 19 while continuing students are set to return to campus this weekend.
While the investigation is still ongoing the university urges first-time students who need counseling services to go to Memorial Hall. Counselors can also be reached at the VSU Counseling Center at (804) 524-5939.
They also strongly recommend to abide by university protocol and sign up for RAVE alerts to report any incident directly to VSU police.
