Beyoncé is known for captivating audiences with electrifying performances in stadiums around the globe. If the buzz is true, Queen Bey may be headlining a different stage and bringing her energy to the Democratic National Convention.
The Daily Beast reports that Beyoncé could perform on Thursday, Aug. 22, the final night of the three-day convention in Chicago. On the same day, Vice President Kamala Harris will take the stage to officially accept the nomination for her presidential bid.
Beyoncé’s appearance at the DNC would make headlines on its own, but the connection between her and the Harris campaign is even more significant. According to CNN, just hours before Harris’ first appearance at her campaign headquarters on July 22 as the newly announced Democratic presidential candidate, Beyoncé’s team approved her song “Freedom” for use throughout Harris’ campaign.
“In this election, we know we each face a question: What kind of country do we want to live in?,” said Harris during the campaign headquarters speech in Wilmington, DE. “A country of freedom, compassion and rule of law, or a country of chaos, fear and hate?”
Released on the singer’s 2016 album Lemonade, the song contains themes of empowerment and resilience. It has been widely embraced as an anthem for movements advocating change across the United States, making it a fitting choice for the Harris campaign’s spirit of progression and liberation.
Though Beyoncé has not yet officially endorsed Harris, she has a history of supporting Democratic presidential nominees. In 2013, she performed the National Anthem at former President Barack Obama’s second inauguration. Alongside her husband, rapper Jay-Z, she headlined a concert supporting Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign in 2016. Finally, she supported the Biden-Harris bid in 2020 through an Instagram post.
Vice President Harris’ presidential campaign was launched shortly after President Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race via X on July 21. Moments later, Biden endorsed his running mate for the presidential nomination. She has since earned endorsements from other democratic leaders such as Barack and Michelle Obama, Hilary Clinton, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and many more.
Harris, an alumna of Howard University, made history when she raised over $81 million in 24 hours, the largest single-day total in U.S. history. If elected, she will make history again as the first Black, Asian-American and female president of the United States.
