Clark Atlanta University’s commencement is set to feature a Black TV icon. On Monday, May 18, actress, director, producer, and cinematographer Debbie Allen is set to address Clark Atlanta’s spring class of 2026.
Allen is a Howard University alumna and is known for her takeover of A Different World after season 2, which led to the sitcom becoming one of the most important in television history. Under the leadership of Allen, the show tackled more serious issues consistent with the times, such as campus sexual assault, HIV and AIDS, the L.A. Riots, and more.
Allen is also involved in the reboot of A Different World that is currently ramping up production on Netflix. She spoke about the original series and the reboot finding a home on Netflix.
“‘A Different World’ is on Netflix right now,” Allen said. “Every episode, all those six years of great work are there for everyone to see. If you talk to me in a week, I might say we’re going. But what we’ve done so far, since we don’t have the commitment yet for the season, was kind of like a proof of life. It’s been a really exciting experience, and we are just waiting to see what happens next. We’re not sure yet, but I can tell you this: If there’s any time that the world needs to hear from young people on college campuses, it’s now.”
Allen is a Howard University alumna and the sister of fellow Howard University alumna and legendary actress and producer Phylicia Rashad.
